Kragujevac

Kragujevac with its 180 000 residents represents the fourth largest city in Serbia, as well as the center of Šumadija Region. It is located 120 km to the south of Belgrade.


Kragujevac is the regional center of an area which includes towns such as Čačak, Kraljevo, Užice, Jagodina, Kruševac, Smederevo, and Požarevac. Until 1990, the city of Kragujevac was the fifth most developed city of the entire former Yugoslavia.


Kragujevac was the first capital of the modern Serbian state.After multiple centuries of Turkish rule, the city was liberated in 1815, and three years later declared the newly-established state’s capital.


The first general high school was established in Kragujevac, as well as the first court, theater, pharmacy, art gallery, etc.


There is a large weapons factory, a truck factory and the FIAT car factory. Present-day Kragujevac is one of four Serbian industrial centers.
